Best base locations quick answer
The best first base is close to safe oxygen fallback, starter resources, a repeatable route to deeper biomes, and enough flat space for storage, power, and vehicle access. Do not build your first serious base in a dramatic deep location until your food, water, power, and repair loops are stable.
| Base site | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Shallows edge | First storage hub, Fabricator workflow, beginner safety. | Can be far from later rare resources. |
| Coral Gardens route | Balanced starter expansion and plant/resource access. | Needs clear beacon discipline in co-op. |
| Raceway approach | Mid-game travel and quartz/medical loops. | More navigation pressure at night. |
| Facility-adjacent outpost | Observatory or Power Plant repair runs. | Not ideal as a first base because hazards and route cost are higher. |
Decision path
Build a small starter hub first, then add outposts near repeated objectives. A good base location reduces travel time without putting every return trip through predator territory. Co-op groups should decide whether the base is a shared warehouse, a route outpost, or a vehicle staging point before expanding.
Power and storage priorities
Place storage near the entrance, keep water and medical supplies near exits, and reserve space for power terminals and vehicle support. If a site cannot support fast unloading and fast relaunching, it is a scenic stop rather than a strong base.
